The mission of The Summer Camp Fund is to help children develop a love of the outdoors that respects and values the environment, encourage continued learning through the summer and provide new experiences and relationships to expand a child's vision of what could be.
Annually, The Summer Camp Fund gives scholarships for use at camps that meet rigorous selection criteria. A robust outdoor program is a key factor weighing into our camp selection. The availability and strength of a swimming program, we believe, may be the only opportunity some children will have to learn to swim, both a health and safety issue. Camps receiving scholarship grants must also provide a literacy component in their programming.

Through 2019, The Summer Camp Fund was funded primarily through an annual appeal to readers on the pages of The Charlotte Observer. Beginning in 2020, we are excited to work with WBTV as our Presenting Sponsor.

Contributions are tax-deductible when made to The Summer Camp Fund, a 501(c)3 organization.
Research shows low-income children lose ground in their months out of school and the gap between them and middle-income students gets larger year by year: "Low income students....lose more than two months in reading achievement, despite the fact that their middle-class peers make slight gains."

Our Impact

The Summer Camp Fund was launched in 2009. In its first 11 years of existence, we have provided scholarships to 4,034 low-income children in the Charlotte region who would likely never have had this experience otherwise.

To meet differing family needs, both overnight and day camp experiences are funded.  The average cost for funding a session of camp in 2019 was $402.
